Rotor Q-Rings

Do Rotor “Q” rings really help? I started testing Rotor's Q rings in March 2011 after several requests from regular customers to stock them. I have a moto in the shop “ if the products not good in our opinion then we won't sell it!”

I fitted the rings to the FSA chainset that is on my Kyklos Featherweight Limited with Di2 (review on bike to follow) and my instant thoughts were I couldn't feel any great difference. Yes I felt as though I was spinning slightly easier but nothing miraculous. How wrong I was! I decided to test one of our demo bikes, again a Kyklos but a different model the Feather. The bike was set up identically to my own bike apart from the FSA chainset had standard round rings on it. I noticed from the off that I was not spinning as smoothly and after an hour an old knee injury from 2010 that put paid to my cycling that year flared up. I had put the lack of pain on the Featherweight Limited down to eventually finding my ideal riding position but obviously this was not the case. I could only put the lack of knee pain down to the Q rings. Further reading of the Rotor sales pitch stated that the Q ring will eliminate knee pain. I can honestly say that for me this is the case.

The rings shift perfectly with Shimano's Di2 on the Kyklos with no chain rub but fitted to Cervelo's this is not the case, something to do with the angle of the front mech hanger. My only complaint regarding the rings is they make a constant tinkling noise from the chain which can be annoying. Set up is very easy but you do have to pay more attention to gear shifting as it is very easy to drop the chain, but this is handler error not set up or the Q rings fault.

Rating 9/10, annoying tinkling noise from rings spoils a perfect 10/10
